  • Odd Sock Day on Wednesday 13 November & Children in Need on Friday 15 November

    Fri 08 Nov 2019

    Dear Parent/Carer,

    Next week’s Events

    Wednesday 13th November, 2019

The week beginning Monday 11th November is Anti-Bullying Week. To mark this event we are holding an Odd Sock Day on Wednesday 13th November. We are encouraging all children and staff to wear odd socks to school for this event and they can be as bright and colourful as you like. This is a fun and safe way for children to express themselves, celebrate their individuality and by taking part with the rest of the school it will demonstrate that we are united against bullying.

Over the course of the week, the children will be learning about what bullying is and what to do if they know someone who is being bullied.

    Friday 15th November, 2019

We will be celebrating Children in Need on Friday 15th November by asking all pupils and staff to come into school in Non-uniform for the suggested donation of £1.00. We would also like to hold a bake sale and are asking for any donations of cakes to be brought into school on the same day for pupils and staff to purchase with all money raised going to Children In Need.

Also on behalf of Laleham Gap School some of our staff are taking part in a sponsored walk for Children in Need from Canterbury to Margate (which is 30 miles) on Saturday 16th November.

If you would like to sponsor our staff then please complete the slip below and return to the school enclosing your donation.

Thank you for your continued support.

    Yours sincerely

    Mrs Katie Reeves

    Deputy Headteacher

    To: Laleham Gap School

I would like to sponsor your staff on their walk for Children In Need and have enclosed a donation of:

  • Parent/Carer Wine and Cheese Evening - 16.10.2019

    Thu 17 Oct 2019

A big thank you to all those who attended the Wine and Cheese evening yesterday. There were 20 of us there from 13 families.

You will find the presentation from last night under Parent/Carers / letters. We talked about the principles, ethos and routines of Restorative Approaches used at Laleham Gap School.

There were many suggestions including the timing of the Year 7 Parents Evening. As a school we will review how the school can increase the communication between tutors and Year 7 families early in the academic year. We discussed the diary date list and its format, again we can try to improve this.

Once again thank you for coming and we will publish a date for the next coffee morning soon. If you have any suggestions for a focus topic then please let me know.

    Kind regards

    Les Milton

  • Spanish and Hispanic Culture Day - Thursday 17 October 2019

    Wed 09 Oct 2019

    Dear Parents and Carers,

Spanish and Hispanic Culture Day – Thursday 17th October, 2019

Part of Laleham Gap School’s Personal Development curriculum includes the aim to promote curious and respectful global citizens.  One way we aim to do this is through enrichment Culture Days across Primary and Secondary classes.

Thursday 17th October 2019, our last day of Term 1, is going to be our whole-school Spanish and Hispanic Culture Day.  All pupils are invited to wear something Spanish-themed or dress in red and yellow to match the colours of the Spanish flag.

Pupils will stay in their usual classes but lessons will be themed to explore the language and culture of Spanish speaking countries.

The school dinner menu will also reflect a Spanish fiesta: Chicken Fajitas and Vegetarian Paella followed by Churros and ice-cream!

We hope it will be a fun and celebratory day for all involved.

    Muchas gracias,

    Mrs Helen Schroepfer

    Personal Development Lead

  • World Mental Health Day Letter

    Wed 02 Oct 2019

    1st October, 2019

    Dear Parents/Guardians,

    World Mental Health Day

On Thursday 10th October it is World Mental Health Day. As part of our continued work surrounding young people’s mental health, wellbeing and promoting children’s rights we will be hosting a #HelloYellow event on behalf of the YoungMinds charity here at Laleham Gap School.

#HelloYellow aims to raise awareness of young people’s mental health and more importantly, aims to demonstrate to all young people with mental health issues that they are not alone.

As part of our participation on Thursday 10th October, we are holding a non-uniform day and encouraging all pupils and staff to wear their favourite item of yellow clothing or their favourite yellow costume.

If your child would like to take part and you are able, we are suggesting a £1 donation for participating in order to raise money for the YoungMinds charity and the important work that they do.

To find out more about the charity’s work, please visit their website, YoungMinds.org.uk.

Thank you for your continued support.

    Yours faithfully,

    Jonathan Deslandes

    Head of Wellbeing

  • Election of Parent Governor

    Mon 23 Sep 2019

    23rd September, 2019

    Dear Parent/Carer

    Election of Parent Governor

I would like to thank Rachel Hussey for being a Parent Governor and on behalf on the Governing Body thank her for her contribution. Unfortunately she has resigned from the position, hence I am writing to invite you to consider standing for election as a Parent Governor for this school.

Every Kent School has a governing body, which includes a number of categories of governors including parent governors. Parent governors are elected to serve a period between one and four years, though they may resign at any time.

Together with the Headteacher, the governing body has overall responsibility for the running of the school. Governors are involved in deciding school policies, allocating the school’s budget and appointing senior staff. No special qualifications are needed and the most important thing is to have a keen interest in the school and be prepared to play an active part in the governing body’s work. In order to support governors in their work, the County Council provides full training for all governors at no charge to the individual.

In our school, we have parent governors who serve for a term of office of 4 years. The full governing body normally meets 6 times a year usually, at school at 6pm.

At this moment in time we have a vacancy for a parent governor and we are ideally looking for any parent with experience and knowledge within Education / Strategic Management / Business and Finance, although we welcome nominations from any parent who is keen to support and promote Laleham Gap School.

If you would like to stand for election, please complete the form in the letters section of the website under Term 1 and return it to me within two school weeks, i.e. by Monday 7th October, 2019. Each person nominated must be proposed and seconded by parents/carers who have a child at the school. Anyone standing for election is invited to provide, with his/her nomination, a short personal statement (maximum of 100 words). The statement should only include biographical information, your reasons for wanting to be a parent governor and the contribution you believe you can make to the governing body.

If there is more than one nomination, an election will be held and copies of the personal statements will be sent to all parents. Two weeks will be allowed for the return of ballot papers. Each parent will have one vote, no matter how many children he or she has at the school.

I do hope you will consider standing as a governor or else nominating another parent/carer. If you would like more information about being a school governor, please contact myself for more information via the school office.

    Yours Sincerely

    Mr Les Milton

    Headteacher

  • Parent / Carer Coffee Morning - 28.06.2019

    Mon 01 Jul 2019

I would like to thank all those people who attended today's coffee morning. Nine families were represented. We were joined today by Roly Speller who is our Chair of Governors and by Cathy Shuter who is the schools Well-being Caseworker. Cathy discussed some of the working practices and we focused on issues around young people and their identities.

We discussed the need for more after-school clubs and there was a request for more sporting activities for our children during the holiday periods. I do take these points on board and l will let you know what it is l feel we can do to support these issues.

I thanked all those who had submitted concerns regarding the planning at the end of Ozengell Place. We discussed sports days and the upcoming summer fairs. I would like to thank all those who participated in the debate and it was agreed that the success of these events is determined by all those who attend and the way in which they support our young people. We all recognise the difficulty in getting the balance right between particpation and competition.

It was agreed that everybody has to make every effort to make these events as enjoyable as possible for everyone and l have full confidence in us all achieving this.

I look forward to seeing many of you at our upcoming events.

    Kind regards

    Les Milton
