Secondary school council at Laleham Gap has an important role to play in making sure students’ voices are heard and their views considered in the school’s decision-making processes. Year 7 to Year 10 elect two councillors to represent them for the year. The Year 11 House and Sport Captains also become members of the Council. Meetings are held every month, chaired by Mrs Schroepfer (Personal Development Lead). Members of the Senior Leadership Team are often invited to update Councillors on school issues and to answer questions. Some of the issues dealt with by council this year has included: reusable water bottles for all pupils to improve hydration and reduce plastic waste and producing Lockdown newsletters for the digital noticeboards and websites to connect the school community.
The Secondary School Council are also Rights Respecting School Ambassadors and are embarking on Travel Training with KYCC as well as supporting the OT Team deliver Sensory Circuits to directly encourage pupils to get the most out of their school experience. The Council were very successful providing peer support with Primary events 2019-2020 so this is a role they are looking to expand from September 2020.
