Reading+ Groups

Reading+ has been developed to bring us together to share our enjoyment of reading in relaxed, mixed-age groups.  Some pupils, for example, are in special interest groups, such as our SFTech Fiction Club or our Reading 4 Science, or Reading 4 History; and then there is our Playscript Club, our Film Club, our Gothic Horror Club; our Student Councillors even have their own Reading+ group, Reading 4 Councillors, where they spend some of their time reading council business.  Some pupils prefer the variety of a Myon Monday, Chooseday Tuesday, Wordy Wednesday, Thinking Thursday and Freedom Friday, while others choose simply to read their favourite books or magazines in small, independent reading groups.

Moving forward, our aim is to encourage greater connections between key stages, with activities such as reading buddies and shared reading performances.  Our first step has been to create Reading Ambassadors in which our most senior pupils join younger children to either model independent reading or to share reading with them.  Our aim is to develop both individual confidence and joy in reading while increasing our pupils’ sense of belonging in our LGS Reading Community.

We are mindful that children and young people who struggle with reading may find it hard to find pleasure in any activity associated with words and language, and Reading+ groups are organised to ensure these pupils have the greatest support.
