To help us develop pupils’ vocabularly skills we have invested in a fantastic digital resource called Bedrock.  This programme supports pupils to develop their Tier 2 vocabulary knowledge, that is, the words they need to access their learning in school.  This is proving popular with pupils, especially among our reluctant readers and is an important part of our reward system (see below).  We aim this year to extend its use beyond the English department in Secondary to focus more widely on subject-specific language.  We want our pupils to have the vocabulary and confidence to express themselves in the language of the subject, to speak and thus to write, for example, as geographers or scientists.  And to do this they need to be able to access the text.  This is our responsibility.
