Frankenstein – Novel/playscript or alternative Gothic Text

 

Students will have either access to the play version of Mary Shelley’s classic tale and be able to explore the themes of science and being an outsider.  NB –teacher discretion is used during the teaching of non-fiction texts and alternative texts maybe used to help enthuse students and aid enjoyment of reading

 

In addition to this students will be studying a range of War themed prose, non-fiction and poetry to develop a wide sense of how literature deepens our understanding of what it is to be human.

Shakespeare

Midsummer’s Night Dream/Romeo and Juliet/Tempest

During this term students will learn the plot, themes and study character from a popular Shakespeare play.  As well as developing their understanding and appreciation for Shakespeare they will develop their creative and transactional writing skills.

Food Technology

Focus Food Nutrition and Health.

During this term students we will re- visit general practical skills but in more detail. Pupils will demonstrate they understand the key skills through practical activities, keeping a record of what skills they have used in the practical lessons.

Focus:

Making food in a sauce or a Stew.

This will involve the students Tenderising and marinating, making sauces as well as understanding skills and the importance of high-level skills, how to adapt a recipe, how to understand food labels and calorie information.

What is a nutritional analysis? The importance of research.

 

Focus: using different types of pastry.

Pasty making to include shortcrust, puff, and choux. Food storage, freezing. Temperature of a freezer. There will be cooking during this unit.

Pupils work in 2D, researching and developing a body of work relating to the theme of texture, working from and influenced by the work of chosen artists and designers. Initial studies can lead to development into a painting or drawing

And a printmaking piece in term 3 Observational drawing will drive the ideas for the outcome of this project.

Pupils will learn the technique of intaglio printing by creating a dry point engraving on to Perspex of a shell.

They will be introduced to the techniques of plate inking and printing using a roller press to produce multiple images one of which they will hand colour in watercolour.

Gargoyles (ceramics) – Students will work to a design brief, ensuring constraints are met. They will be introduced to gargoyles and the Gothic genre. They will develop their understanding of other times and cultures through the exploration of the gothic genre, looking at architecture, film and literature (poem). By doing this they will develop their understanding of context and how gargoyles fit into this context. In year 9 connections start to be made between the KS3 course and the KS4 GCSE programme of study.

Day of the Dead (textiles / 3D modelling) - Students will work to a design brief, ensuring constraints are met. Students are introduced to the Mexican festival of The Day of the Dead. They will be encouraged to empathise with peoples of different cultures and to develop an understanding that we live in a global society. Pupils will realise that art is not only concerned with the practical or purely aesthetic but also an exploration of cultures, meaning and the many important contemporary social issues and traditions. Pupils will work to design briefs and explore a range of media and materials culminating in a number of 2D and 3D design related outcomes, including silk painting, Mexican tin art and 3D

modelling.

Jon Burgerman project brief (graphics / 3D / resistant materials)- Students are set a live design brief to design a clock inspired by the contemporary applied artist Jon Burgerman.  Students reflect upon his work and create their own ‘doodle’ characters.  They experiment with ideas and compositions.  Students will use MDF for their clock base, cutting and finishing using appropriate tools and equipment.
