    What is Hamish and Milo?

The Hamish and Milo Intervention Programme is made up from ten week modules, designed to help children build emotional literacy, resilience, and a sense of belonging. Developed by experienced educators and psychotherapists, the programme explores ten key emotional themes, such as friendship, anxiety, self-esteem, anger, loss, and change.

At our school, these sessions form part of both our universal and targeted approach to supporting children. Teachers may deliver the programme to a whole class, but some pupils benefit from taking part in small-group interventions outside their usual lessons, normally in the Workshop. When your child is invited to join an intervention group, we will contact you beforehand.

    What Happens in the Sessions?

Each session uses creative, playful activities – such as crafts, journaling, discussion, and reflection – to help children express themselves and develop practical emotional tools.

Sessions begin with a warm welcome and check-in, followed by a focus activity and end with reflection and a wellbeing journal entry. Delivered by trained staff, the programme helps children feel heard, valued, and supported.

If your child is enrolled in one of these modules as a targeted intervention, we will contact you with a letter to explain this and provide the information sheet to go with it.

    Exploding Me

This programme is designed to help children with strong emotions.

Being able to recognise the triggers and the physiological effects of anger and strong feelings, as well as being able to learn ways to express these feeling safely to adults who can hear, contain and support them, is crucial for children’s life-long mental health.

    Finding Me

This programme is designed to help children with sadness.

Sometimes children know what they are sad about but sometimes they don’t and this can be because of deep blocked feelings inside them. In this programme we begin to look at sadness and how this can present itself. We help children with ways to be able to express and make sense of their feelings.

    Memories and Me

This programme is designed to help children with loss and bereavement.

Coping with loss, bereavement and grief is incredibly painful and personal. There is often a fear of talking about it, in case it brings up feelings that are overwhelming. However, this is something that we all need to do in a safe, compassionate and thoughtful way, with someone who can hear and ‘hold us’ through it.

    My Friends and Me

This programme is designed to help children with friendships.

Children need opportunities to talk about their friendships and peer relationships and the range of feelings and experiences they feel within them. Children need support to learn how to navigate the tricky times as well as to celebrate the great times.

    New Beginnings and Me

This programme is designed to help children with changes and transitions.

Children need time to talk about their feelings and experiences and to feel understood as they navigate new opportunities. With new beginnings there are also endings. It is important that endings are celebrated and reflected on so that children can be open to new adventures that come their way.

    Resilient Me

This programme is designed to help children with resilience.

Having resilience is a life skill that we all need to help us overcome obstacles, to help us persevere and to overcome adversity so that we can reach our own success and strive for our dreams.
